"Entonces dijo Jesús a los
judíos que habían creído en él: Si vosotros permaneciereis en mi palabra,
seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos; y conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os
hará libres."-Juan 8:31,32

know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."—John 8:31,32 .
La predicación de nuestro Señor siempre producía dos efectos opuestos en las multitudes promiscuas que lo escuchaban. Atraía a una clase y repelía a otra. Aquellos que estaban llenos de orgullo y presunción, y que preferían las tinieblas a la luz porque sus obras eran malas, y porque se daban cuenta de que si admitían la luz de la verdad debían necesariamente conformar sus caracteres a ella, todos ellos eran repelidos por las enseñanzas de Cristo. Y si el Señor hubiera emprendido la obra del ministerio según los métodos que se siguen hoy, dependiendo para su sostenimiento de la buena voluntad y de las contribuciones del pueblo, ese sostenimiento habría sido a menudo muy exiguo o, por lo menos, muy fluctuante. En algunas ocasiones multitudes recibían su testimonio, y más tarde lo abandonaban y no caminaban más con él, mientras continuaba imponiendo las lecciones de la verdad divina. (Lucas 4:14,15,22,28,29) A veces las multitudes estaban pendientes de sus palabras, maravilladas por las palabras de gracia que salían de su boca; y una y otra vez lo abandonaban, mientras sólo quedaba un puñado. (Juan 6:60,66-69) Qué consternación seguiría en las diversas iglesias de hoy, si los profesos ministros del evangelio siguieran el ejemplo del Maestro al declarar de manera similar todo el consejo de Dios. Cuán rápidamente se volverían impopulares y se les acusaría de disolver la iglesia. Vaya, las grandes congregaciones que ahora abarrotan los templos de moda dedicados al servicio de Dios y a las enseñanzas de Cristo no lo soportarían. Van allí para ser entretenidos con discursos agradables y elocuentes de caballeros titulados que, presumiblemente, conocen sus gustos e ideas, y que predicarán para complacerlos. Están dispuestos a pagar su dinero por lo que quieren, pero no quieren la verdad.
OUR Lord's preaching always
produced two opposite effects upon the promiscuous multitudes that heard him.
It attracted one class and repelled another. Those who were full of pride and
conceit, and who preferred darkness to light because their deeds were evil, and
because they realized that if they admitted the light of truth they must of
necessity conform their characters to it,—all such were repelled by the
teachings of Christ. And if the Lord had undertaken the work of the ministry
according to the methods pursued today, depending for support on the good will
and contributions of the people, that support would often have been very
meager, or, at least, very fluctuating. On some occasions multitudes received
his testimony, and later deserted him and walked no more with him, as he
continued to enforce the lessons of
divine truth. (Luke 4:14,15,22,28,29) Sometimes the multitudes hung upon
his words, wondering at the gracious words that proceeded out of his mouth; and
again and again they forsook him, while only a mere handful remained. (John
6:60,66-69) What consternation would follow in the various churches of today,
if the professed ministers of the gospel should follow the Master's example in
similarly declaring the whole counsel of God. How quickly they would become
unpopular, and be charged with breaking up the church. Why, the great
congregations that now throng the temples of fashion dedicated to the service
of God and the teachings of Christ would not stand it! They go there to be
entertained with pleasing and eloquent discourses from titled gentlemen who,
presumably, know their tastes and ideas, and who will preach to please them.
They are quite willing to pay their money for what they want, but they do not
want the truth.
Aquellos que siguieron al Señor sólo por un tiempo y luego lo abandonaron, por supuesto, dejaron de ser sus discípulos y ya no fueron reconocidos como tales; ni presumieron más de ser sus discípulos. Un discípulo es un alumno, un aprendiz; y cuando alguien deja de ser alumno y discípulo de Cristo, el gran Maestro, ya no es discípulo de Cristo. Esto era muy evidente cuando el Señor estaba presente, y cuando su nombre era objeto de reproche entre los hombres; pero más tarde, cuando su presencia se retiró, y cuando sus doctrinas se mezclaron sin escrúpulos con filosofías humanas hasta tal punto que se despojaron de su reproche y quedaron realmente anuladas, entonces los hombres comenzaron a pretender ser sus discípulos, mucho después de haber repudiado totalmente sus doctrinas.
Those who followed the Lord only
for a little season and then forsook him, of course, ceased then to be his
disciples and were no longer so recognized; nor did they presume longer to
claim to be his disciples. A disciple is a pupil, a learner; and when any man
ceases to be a student and pupil of Christ, the great Teacher, he is no longer
a disciple of Christ. This was very manifest when the Lord was present, and
when his name was one of reproach among men; but later, when his presence was
withdrawn, and when his doctrines were unscrupulously mixed with human philosophies
to such an extent as to divest them of their reproach, and to make them really
void, then men began to claim to be his disciples—long after they had utterly
repudiated his doctrines.
La expresión del Señor - "discípulos sinceros"- implica una distinción entre discípulos reales y discípulos meramente nominales. Y puesto que deseamos continuar siendo sus discípulos reales y sinceros, fijémonos en la condición expresada: "Si permanecéis en mi palabra, seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos". La hipocresía del discipulado meramente nominal es una abominación para el Señor.
The Lord's
expression—"disciples indeed"—implies a distinction between real and
merely nominal disciples. And since we desire to continue to be his real,
sincere disciples, let us mark the expressed condition: "If ye continue in
my word, then are ye my disciples indeed." The hypocrisy of merely nominal
discipleship is an abomination to the Lord.
Es algo bendito dar el primer paso en la vida cristiana: creer y aceptar a Cristo como nuestro Redentor y Señor; pero la recompensa de este paso depende enteramente de nuestra permanencia en su Palabra, en la actitud de verdaderos discípulos. No es difícil hacerlo; sin embargo, la disposición del orgullo humano es alejarse de la sencillez de la verdad divina y buscar nuevas teorías y filosofías propias, o curiosear en las de otros hombres, que desean ser considerados sabios y grandes según la estimación de este mundo.
It is a blessed thing to take the
first step in the Christian life—that of belief in and acceptance of Christ as
our Redeemer and Lord; but the reward of this step depends entirely upon our
continuance in his Word, in the attitude of true disciples. It is not difficult
to do this, yet the disposition of human pride is to wander away from the
simplicity of divine truth and to seek out new theories and philosophies of our
own, or to pry into those of other men, who desire to be considered wise and
great according to this world's estimate.
La recompensa del discipulado continuo es: "Conoceréis la verdad"-no que estaremos "siempre buscando y nunca llegaremos al conocimiento de la verdad." (2 Timoteo 3:7) Aquí está el error que muchos cometen: al no continuar en la Palabra del Señor, se adentran en diversas filosofías humanas que ignoran o pervierten la Palabra del Señor y establecen teorías opuestas. No hay promesa, para aquellos que buscan la verdad entre estas, de que alguna vez la encontrarán. Y nunca la encuentran. La verdad divina nunca se encuentra excepto en los canales divinamente designados: y esos canales son el Señor y los apóstoles y profetas. Continuar en la doctrina expuesta en sus escritos inspirados, estudiarlos y meditarlos, confiar implícitamente en ellos y conformar fielmente nuestro carácter a ellos, es lo que implica continuar en la Palabra del Señor.
The reward of continued
discipleship is, "Ye shall know the truth"—not that we shall be
"ever seeking and never coming to a knowledge of the truth." (2 Tim.
3:7) Here is the mistake that many make: failing to continue in the Word of the
Lord, they delve into various human philosophies which ignore or pervert the
Word of the Lord and set up opposing theories. There is no promise, to those
who seek for truth among these, that they shall ever find it. And they never
do. Divine truth is never found except in the divinely appointed channels: and
those channels are the Lord and the apostles and prophets. To continue in the
doctrine set forth in their inspired writings, to study and meditate upon them,
to trust implicitly in them, and faithfully to conform our characters to them,
is what is implied in continuing in the Word of the Lord.
Pero la idea es totalmente compatible con la de prestar atención a todas las ayudas que el Señor suscita de vez en cuando entre nuestros hermanos en el cuerpo de Cristo, tal como las enumera el apóstol Pablo (Efesios 4:11-15; 1 Co. 12:13,14).El Señor siempre ha suscitado, y suscitará hasta el fin, tales ayudas para la edificación del cuerpo de Cristo; pero es deber de cada miembro comprobar cuidadosamente su enseñanza por la Palabra infalible.
But the idea is entirely
compatible with that of heeding all the helps which the Lord from time to time
raises up from among our brethren in the body of Christ, as enumerated by the
Apostle Paul. (Eph. 4:11-15; 1 Cor. 12:13,14) The Lord always has raised up,
and will to the end raise up, such helps for the edification of the body of
Christ; but it is the duty of every member to prove carefully their teaching by
the infallible Word.
Si así continuamos en la Palabra del Señor, como discípulos serios y sinceros, ciertamente "conoceremos la verdad", estaremos "establecidos en la verdad presente" (la verdad debida), y estaremos "arraigados y cimentados en la verdad"; Seremos "firmes en la fe", y "capaces de dar razón de la esperanza que hay en nosotros", de "contender ardientemente por la fe que ha sido una vez dada a los santos", de "pelear la buena batalla", de "dar testimonio de la buena confesión", y de "soportar con firmeza las penalidades como buenos soldados de Jesucristo", hasta el fin de nuestra carrera. No llegaremos al conocimiento de la verdad de un solo salto, sino que gradualmente, paso a paso, seremos conducidos a la verdad. Cada paso será un progreso seguro y cierto, y cada uno conducirá a una posición más elevada para mayores logros tanto en el conocimiento como en sus frutos benditos de carácter establecido.
If we thus continue in the Word
of the Lord, as earnest and sincere disciples, we shall indeed "know the
truth," be "established in the present truth" (the truth due),
and be "rooted and grounded in the truth;" we shall be "firm in
the faith," and "able to give a reason for the hope that is in
us," to "earnestly contend for the faith once delivered to the
saints," to "war a good warfare," to "witness a good
confession," and firmly to "endure hardship as good soldiers of Jesus
Christ," even unto the end of our course. We will not come into the
knowledge of the truth at a single bound; but gradually, step by step, we will
be led into the truth. Every step will be one of sure and certain progress, and
each one leading to a higher vantage ground for further attainments both in
knowledge and in its blessed fruits of established character.
La verdad así adquirida, paso a paso, se convierte en un poder santificador que produce en nuestras vidas sus benditos frutos de justicia, paz, gozo en el Espíritu Santo, amor, mansedumbre, fe, paciencia y toda virtud y toda gracia, que el tiempo y el cultivo madurarán hasta una gloriosa madurez.
The truth thus acquired, step by
step, becomes a sanctifying power bringing forth in our lives its blessed
fruits of righteousness, peace, joy in the holy Spirit, love, meekness, faith,
patience and every virtue and every grace, which time and cultivation will
ripen to a glorious maturity.
Y no sólo el verdadero discípulo conocerá así la verdad y será santificado por ella, sino que el Señor también dijo: "La verdad os hará libres." Los que han recibido la verdad conocen por bendita experiencia algo de su poder liberador. Tan pronto como una medida de ella es recibida en un corazón bueno y honesto, comienza a arrancar las cadenas del pecado, de la ignorancia y la superstición, y del temor. Arroja sus rayos restauradores de la salud en los recovecos más oscuros de nuestros corazones y mentes, y así vigoriza todo el ser. El pecado no puede soportar su luz; y aquellos que continúan viviendo en el pecado cuando se ha recibido suficiente luz para manifestar su deformidad, inevitablemente deben perder la luz porque son indignos de ella.
And not only shall the true
disciple thus know the truth and be sanctified by it, but the Lord also said,
"The truth shall make you free." Those who have received the truth
know by blessed experience something of its liberating power. As soon as any measure
of it is received into a good and honest heart, it begins to strike off the
fetters of sin, of ignorance and superstition, and of fear. It throws its
health-restoring beams into the darkest recesses of our hearts and minds, and
thus invigorates the whole being. Sin cannot endure its light; and those who
continue to live in sin when a sufficiency of light has been received to
manifest its deformity must inevitably lose the light because they are unworthy
of it.
La ignorancia y la superstición deben desvanecerse ante la luz de la verdad. Y ¡qué bendita realización es estar así liberado! Millones están todavía bajo este yugo atroz. Bajo sus engaños temen y reverencian a algunos de los más bajos instrumentos de Satanás para su opresión y degradación, porque hipócritamente reclaman designación divina; y se les ha hecho temer a Dios como un tirano vengativo que consigna a la vasta mayoría de Sus criaturas a una eternidad de tormento. Gracias a Dios, los que hemos recibido la verdad hemos escapado de esa terrible pesadilla, y se ha roto la esclavitud de Satanás sobre nosotros.
Ignorance and superstition must
vanish before the light of truth. And what a blessed realization it is to be
thus liberated! Millions are still under this galling yoke. Under its delusions
they fear and reverence some of the basest tools of Satan for their oppression
and degradation, because they hypocritically claim divine appointment; and they
have been made to fear God as a vengeful tyrant consigning the vast majority of
His creatures to an eternity of torment. Thank God, we who have received the
truth have escaped that terrible nightmare, and the bondage of Satan over us is
broken!
Se nos libera también del temor que ahora vemos venir sobre el mundo entero, a medida que los grandes sistemas civiles y eclesiásticos que durante tanto tiempo han gobernado el mundo están siendo terriblemente sacudidos. Todas las personas pensantes temen el posible desenlace de anarquía y terror. Y la alarma de todos aumentará a medida que nos acerquemos a la terrible crisis hacia la que nos precipitamos rápidamente, y a medida que el peligro se haga más y más visible. Sin embargo, en medio de todo ello, y con la plena seguridad de la infalible Palabra de Dios sobre los terrores del conflicto por el que el mundo tendrá que pasar dentro de pocos años, los verdaderos discípulos de Cristo que permanecen en su Palabra no tienen miedo, sino que se regocijan, porque saben que el objeto de Dios al permitir la tormenta es limpiar la atmósfera moral del mundo, y que, después de la tormenta, vendrá, por su providencia, una paz duradera. Instruidos en la verdad, se dan cuenta de las necesidades de la situación, y tienen confianza en la divina providencia que puede hacer que hasta la ira del hombre lo alabe.
We are made free, too, from the
fear that we now see coming upon the whole world, as the great civil and
ecclesiastical systems that have so long ruled the world are being terribly
shaken. All thinking people are in dread of the possible outcome of anarchy and
terror. And the alarm of all will increase as we near the awful crisis toward
which we are rapidly hastening, and as the danger becomes more and more
visible. Yet, in the midst of it all, and with the fullest assurance of the
infallible Word of God of the terrors of the conflict through which the world
will have to pass within a few years, the true disciples of Christ who abide in
his Word are not afraid, but rejoice, because they know that God's object in
permitting the storm is to clear the moral atmosphere of the world, and that,
after the storm, there shall come, by His providence, an abiding peace.
Instructed in the truth, they realize the necessities of the situation, and
have confidence in the divine providence that can make even the wrath of man to
praise Him.
Bendita promesa: "Si
vosotros permaneciereis en mi palabra, seréis verdaderamente mis discípulos, y
conoceréis la verdad, y la verdad os hará libres". Queridos
hermanos, habiendo recibido este favor del Señor, ¿no permaneceremos en él, sin
prestar atención a doctrinas seductoras? ¿Y no le seremos fieles en toda
circunstancia, defendiéndola contra todo asalto y soportando con ella su
reproche? Demostrémosle
nuestro aprecio con nuestra lealtad y fidelidad.
Blessed promise!—"If ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed, and ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." Dearly beloved, having received this favor from the Lord, shall we not continue in it, giving no heed to seducing doctrines? And shall we not be faithful to it under all circumstances, defending it against every assault, and with it bearing its reproach? Let us prove our appreciation of it by our loyalty and faithfulness to it. R3153
